Is microneedling safe?

Clinic microneedling with a medical device is very safe. Home rollers and unqualified practitioners are where problems start.

Is microneedling safe?

Quick answer: Medical microneedling with a sterile device such as SkinPen, performed by a trained practitioner, is very safe for most people. Risks rise with home rollers, poor hygiene or treating over active acne or infection.

Why the device matters

SkinPen uses a sterile single-use cartridge and needles that move straight in and out at a set depth. Rollers drag needles at an angle and can tear skin.

Who should not have it

People with active acne, cold sores, skin infections, eczema flares, recent isotretinoin use or keloid scarring may need to wait or choose another treatment.

Normal reactions

Redness like mild sunburn for one to two days, slight tightness and occasional pinpoint marks are normal.

Choosing a clinic

Ask what device is used, how it is sterilised and what aftercare you will be given.

Common questions

Can microneedling cause scarring?

When done correctly scarring is very rare. It is used to treat scars.
