Retinol for beginners: how to start without irritation

The most proven anti-ageing ingredient also causes the most irritation when used wrongly. Here is a gentle way in.

Retinol for beginners: how to start without irritation

Quick answer: Start with a low-strength retinol two or three nights a week, apply a pea-sized amount to dry skin, moisturise and always wear SPF. Increase frequency over 4 to 6 weeks.

Why retinol

Retinol speeds up cell turnover and stimulates collagen, improving fine lines, texture, pigmentation and breakouts. It is one of the best-studied skincare ingredients.

Starting slowly

Begin with a low strength such as Obagi Retinol 0.5, two or three nights a week. If your skin is comfortable after two weeks, increase to every other night, then nightly.

Managing the adjustment period

Some dryness, flaking or tingling is common in the first few weeks. Buffer with moisturiser, skip a night if needed, and avoid other exfoliating acids at the same time.

When not to use it

Avoid retinoids if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and stop a few days before peels, microneedling or laser unless your practitioner advises otherwise.

Common questions

What is the difference between retinol and tretinoin?

Tretinoin is a prescription-strength retinoid that works faster but irritates more. It is supplied after a prescriber consultation.
